gilberto aceves navarro (1931–2019) a student of siqueiros and one of mexico's greatest exponents of expressionism, aceves navarro was a free spirit who refused to be labeled. born in mexico city on september 24, 1931, by age 22 he was already assisting on murals at unam, and later taught in los angeles. his work — spanning figuration to abstraction — always carried a social conscience, denouncing abuses and atrocities. his mural "canto triste por biafra" is considered a landmark of the ruptura movement, though he never considered himself part of it. "my work belongs to my time," he said. his series "las bicicletas" and "los patinadores" grew from an urban art project promoting cycling as clean transport, exhibited in bellas artes, new york, washington, and virginia. to own one of his prints is to hold a piece of mexican art history.
