the structural body emerges from the interaction between a natural root and an artificial intervention that organizes and extends its gesture horizontally. rather than anchoring at a center, the table opens outward, constructing a gesture of coverage comparable to a tree canopy that shelters and defines the space beneath it.
the dark, polished surface reads as a silent, contained mass, set against the expressive irregularity of the organic root. this relationship echoes the translation between nature and music: just as an instrument converts physical gesture into sound, the table transforms organic complexity into a legible and inhabitable structure.
more than a functional object, this piece is conceived as a spatial instrument an artifact in which nature and technology act as co-authors, producing a form situated between landscape, architecture, and the sensory memory of sound and shade.

nature + artifice is a body of work by industrial designer juan ignacio michel that explores the relationship between natural intelligence and human-made systems. rooted in industrial design and informed by craft and advanced manufacturing, the collection examines how technology can extend, not replace, traditional knowledge.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
the pieces are developed in close collaboration with juan manuel “pibe,” a master carpenter, and his team of artisans working in a small traditional workshop near kake chapala, mexico. their hands on expertise in shaping parota wood roots is fundamental to the identity of the collection. through this collaboration, digital tools and contemporary processes are used to translate singular natural forms into functional, sculptural artifacts.
