This piece explores extension as both a structural and symbolic principle. Inspired by the behavior of a large tree’s root system, the table expands outward in multiple directions, evoking the continuous effort required to anchor itself against gravitational and atmospheric forces that generate tension, torsion, and instability.

The structural body is formed through the interaction between a natural root and an artificial intervention that introduces geometric precision and formal control. Both elements operate as an active system of resistance and expansion, where form is not imposed but emerges in response to load, stress, and balance. The relationship between organic matter and technological intervention is conceived as a form of co-authorship, in which each contributes a distinct constructive logic.

The glass surface, extended to the limits of the structure, acts as a mediating plane that reveals rather than dominates the composition. The contrast between the root’s extreme irregularity and the exactness of the upper plane reinforces the work’s central tension: the natural and the artificial in dynamic balance.

More than a table, this piece functions as a structural landscape, an inhabitable form where nature’s constructive intelligence is amplified through technology.

nature + artifice is a body of work by industrial designer juan ignacio michel that explores the relationship between natural intelligence and human-made systems. rooted in industrial design and informed by craft and advanced manufacturing, the collection examines how technology can extend, not replace, traditional knowledge.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

the pieces are developed in close collaboration with juan manuel “pibe,” a master carpenter, and his team of artisans working in a small traditional workshop near kake chapala, mexico. their hands on expertise in shaping parota wood roots is fundamental to the identity of the collection. through this collaboration, digital tools and contemporary processes are used to translate singular natural forms into functional, sculptural artifacts.
